Introduction
The Gladesville Campus (the site and surrounds of the Old Gladesville Hospital) is an important health, government and community space which has significant value as a heritage site overlooking Sydney Harbour.
Established in 1837 as a hospital for the mentally ill, this site housed the first psychiatric hospital in Australia. While it has strong heritage value, it’s also well loved for its harbour views and green open spaces.
It is important that the Gladesville Campus site is carefully managed and looked after for long term sustainability, so NSW Health has initiated a Master Planning process which will guide the future uses of this unique site.
In recent years, there have been calls for more community services and commercial development opportunities on the site. A Master Plan will ensure that any future development is consistent and complementary to the site as a whole.
NSW Health invites the community to give feedback and share ideas about the future of the Gladesville Campus site.
What is a Master Plan?
A Master Plan is a high level plan designed to provide a coordinated approach to future development. Master Plans contain a series of illustrations and explanatory text to specify the planning principles and controls within a particular area as a whole. Their intent is to guide landowners, government and the community on how and where development should occur.
The Master Planning process will determine how the Gladesville Campus can best be used in the future, considering heritage, setting, existing uses, future uses and sustainability. The Gladesville Campus Master Plan is a long term vision for the site and will take many years to implement.
A team of architects, planners, urban designers, traffic engineers, landscape architects and feasibility experts are investigating the opportunities and constraints of the site and consulting with the community to develop draft options.
