Exercise Intervention to prevent falls and enhance mobility in community dwellers after stroke: A randomised controlled trial

Summary

The report describes the implementation and evaluation of the Exercise after Stroke project conducted by the University of Sydney, Stroke Recovery Association of NSW and Health Promotion Service of Sydney South West Area Health Serivce. The 12 month intervention for long term stroke survivors included weekly exercise classes (lower limb Weight-bearing Exercise for Better Balance), a home program and advice to increase walking. A prospective randomised controlled trial was conducted, which found the intervention was more effective than the control in improving walking capacity and walking speed in community dwelling stroke survivors.
