Emergency Department Senior Assessment and Streaming model of care

Summary

The Emergency Department (ED) Senior Assessment and Streaming (ED SAS) model is a model of care for EDs which enables earlier senior medical input and aims to reduce ED total length of stay through the principles of:

• Early Senior Medical assessment of patients, initiation of treatment and often, disposition decision immediately following triage.
• Streaming of patients who present to ED to the most appropriate area to complete their care, whether that is within the ED or another area outside the ED (for example a Medical Assessment Unit).
