Factors that Impact on Referral Rates for Radiotherapy

Summary

Treatment available for people affected by cancer include surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as well as other hormonal and targeted therapies. Radiotherapy is one of the main treatments for cancer, and is both a clinically and technically complex treatment. Radiotherapy uses ionising radiation to destroy or damage cancer cells so they cannot multiply. However, not all cancers will require radiotherapy as part of the treatment process.

This paper lists a number of factors that impact on referal rates for radiotherapy, and which have varying levels of evidence to support their inclusion.

A literature review is also included.
