The Centre for Population Health has responsibility for coordinating drug and alcohol policy development and implementation across the NSW Health system.

NSW Health Strategic Priorities 2019-20

The NSW Health Strategic Priorities 2019-20 includes under the strategy of 'Keeping people healthy', embedding a health system response to alcohol and other drugs and work across government agencies.

Alcohol and Other Drugs Priority areas for 2019-2020 are:

  • Strengthen social marketing campaigns to reduce alcohol and other drug-related use and harm
  • Strengthen telephone support with additional digital communication channels and continue towards integration
  • Strengthen the system response for pregnant women who use substances
  • Drive the Opioid Treatment Program and increase access to take home naloxone
  • Improve access to consultation liaison services for drug and alcohol clients in emergency departments
  • Reduce stigma and discrimination experienced by consumers in the delivery of treatment and care

NSW Alcohol Snapshot

The Centre for Population Health has developed a regular report on alcohol-related data in NSW and actions the Health system is undertaking to address alcohol-related harm.​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

The Premier’s Priorities

The NSW Government is working to achieve the Premier’s fourteen priorities through lifting education standards, keeping children safe, breaking the cycles of crime, homelessness and recidivism, improving the health system, developing better environments, with a clear focus on better customer service across NSW.

NSW State Health Plan

The NSW State Health Plan reflects the health priorities in the NSW Government's State Plan with strategies based on evidence of what works and challenging targets set for the future. The State Health Plan identifies drug and alcohol misuse as a priority area.

NSW Rural Health Plan

The NSW Rural Health Plan: Towards 2021, launched on 7 November 2014, aims to strengthen the capacity of NSW rural health services to provide connected and seamless care. The plan builds on the significant achievements made to date in rural health services, aiming to provide world class care as close to home as possible for people living in rural NSW.​​​​​​​
